Crochet Basic Instructions and Patterns

I'm going to list a few of my favorite beginner patterns here. These are some of the ones I started with. There are many links in the first post that list tons of patterns for you.
Double Thick Nylon Scouring Pad

Materials: About 1 ounce of 100% nylon yarn
Crochet hook size G
Finished size: About 4" x 4"
Ch 16
Row 1: Sc in second chain from hook and in each chain across, ch 1, turn. (15 sc)
Row 2: Sc across, inserting hook in back loop of row 1 and loop of foundation chain; ch 1, turn. (15sc)
Row 3: Sc across, inserting hook in back loop of row 2 and unworked loop of row 1; ch 1 turn. (15 sc)
Rows 4-24: Repeat row 3, inserting hook in back loop of the previous row and unworked loop 2 rows below; ch 1, turn. (15 sc)
Row 25: Repeat row 3, inserting hook in BOTH loops of row 24, and the unworked loop of row 23. Fasten off. Weave in ends.

Hat Size Guidelines
Full-term: Circumference 10.5 inches, Length 6 to 6.5 inches
X-Large preemie: Circumference 9 inches, Length 5.5 inches
Large preemie: Circumference 8 inches, Length 4.5 to 5 inches
Medium preemie: Circumference 7 inches, Length 4 to 4.5 inches
Small preemie: Circumference 6 inches, Length 3.5 to 4 inches
X-Small preemie: Circumference 5.5 inches, Length 3.5
These may be made for tinier babies by using baby or sport weight yarn and a size F crochet hook:
Please measure hats carefully...they should be no more than 11" across before stitching up.
Materials needed: 2oz soft 4 ply worsted yarn; size G crochet hook.
Row 1: Ch 35, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each ch across row. Ch 1 and turn.
Row 2: Work in the back loops only. Sc in each st across row. Ch 1 and turn.
Rows 3-56: Repeat row 2. End off after the last st on Row 56 leaving a 12" tail to stitch up side and gather top. Finishing: Sew back loops of first and last rows together; when you reach the top weave thread in and out to gather. Pull tightly. Add a matching pompom on the top.
Before gathering, hat should measure approximately 7" X 10.5" - 11".
