My little ones are about big now. In the end, they all have done pretty good despite the system.
This one is a pet peeve of mine. I saw the disastrous results of big city public education with one of my daughters, also experienced the benefits of small town, supposedly backwards education with myself and two other daughters........
This article got me thinking about the subject today:
news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20081231/ap_on_re_us/obama_schools
Click the link if you want to take time to read it. It is more of the same old drivel, politics and money versus education.
I know we have at least one excellent public school teacher here, as well as some homeschoolers. Seems like a good place to put forth my thoughts about the subject. The little blurb above shows great concern at high levels at giving all students access to the internet - Please give me a break. Internet money, PC's for every student, more $$ for administrators and guidance counselors...... will someone please educate ME as to how any of this BS helps students learn?
This is my position on education, admittedly it is empirical only.
You place students in a reasonably comfortable classroom, not too cold in winter and not too hot in summer. No computers, no televisions. Textbooks are optional, maybe helpful but not really required.
You place a competent teacher in a position of authority over the students. The teacher LECTURES the students who are required to TAKE NOTES and do HOMEWORK and READ books outside of class. The teacher is required to KNOW THE SUBJECT MATTER HE/SHE is teaching.
The Teacher uses a chalkboard!! or an overhead projector. The students use paper and pencils.
That. Is. All. That. Is. Required.
So. Am I hopelessly out of touch with reality or is the entirety of our public education system a hopeless morass of corruption, union politics, and power hungry nanny-state progressives.
Whaddya think?
