I'm writing this because a poster whom I admire and respect greatly made some worrisome remarks about "Assault Rifles". This is just my opinion on so-called assault rifles, and, well, an attempt to start the brainwashing and subversion into the gun culture of this particular poster and any others......
Bad, ain't I, LOL. Hey, at least I'm honest.
There are two definitions for assault rifles in common use today. The first is used by those who wish to disarm our society, it goes "Assault rifles are the most powerful weapons in existence, only armies and police need assault rifles, these things are inhabited by demons and will cause normal human beings to kill their friends and neighbors in massive numbers........ad nauseum"
There is another, truer, definition that has a few interesting components:
An Assault rifle is a short, carbine-sized long arm firing an intermediate (Between handgun and full-size rifle) round. Interesting, wot? This means that, contrary to leftist mythology, the rounds fired by these weapons are smaller and weaker (Actually, much weaker!!) than those fired by the typical redneck's deer rifle.
Assault rifles replaced the so-called battle rifles of the 1950's and 1960's (FN/FAL, the never fully realized M14, the German G3), all of which used the 7.62 x 51 (almost .308 Win) round as well as the oft-overlooked MAS49/56 firing the 7.5 Frog round.
These were big, heavy rifles firing nearly full-size rifle rounds which were still a step down from the older US service round, .30-06.
So, as far as rifle cartridges go, assault rifle rounds are wimpy.
What they are is SMALL and LIGHT = Easier to carry large amount of ammo, easier for conscript troops to master because much less recoil than the big rifles. Coincidentally, this means easier for "regular people" to learn to use ............... Try hauling a G3 around for a few hours, it is a large piece of lead, also kicks like a mule.
So, we have established the Assault Rifle is smaller / shorter than a full-size rifle (Used to be carbines, but Assault Rifle is so much catchier, lol, blame Hitler, his dudes named the first one, the STG-44 which fired a REALLY puny round, the 7.92 x 33 Kurz, basically a much-shortened version of the 8mm cartridge of Mauser fame.) and fires a round stronger than pistol but weaker than rifle. What else? They are select fire. They have capability for semi-auto (One trigger pull = one shot, just like the Remington 7400 or Browning's sporter BAR's, magazine fed choices of hundreds of thousands of deer hunters today), full - auto like a machine gun, or, sometimes, 2 / 3 shot burst capability.
The leftist BS about bayonet lugs, pistol grips, or hi-cap mags is just that - Leftist BS. When was the last time we read about a mass murderer committing "Assault with Deadly Bayonet" or "Felonious Pistol-Grip Assault".
Oh, and the absolute crap about Assault Rifles having flash suppressors to hide their location at night is perhaps the single most blatant lie ever told by the MSM. A rifle with a flash suppressor, firing at night, shows up like a 4th of July display. A good flash suppressor directs the muzzle flash slightly out of the shooter's direct vision (Sideways and down) so hopefully the shooter won't be completely blinded by his or her first shot. That is all it does.
Real assault rifle can only be owned, legally, by civilians who pay licensing fees, undergo extensive background checks by the Feds, and are willing to pay prices equal to what a new car costs. Definitely a rich man's toys. They are not sold in pawn shops. They are rarely sold at gun shows except by licensed dealers to rich collectors.
They are illegally smuggled into the country by gangs and criminals, but YOU can't own one. Gets you a lifetime in Fed prison, is all.
However, the semi-auto AK and AR based rifles we can own LOOK like the real deal. Therefore, they become a convenient and conspicuous target for those who want to ban ALL our firearms.
I have several semi-auto AK look-alikes, all legal. They are easy to shoot, easy to maintain, suitable for small-statured shooters, don't have excessive recoil, easy to teach, easy to clean, robust, reliable, handy for self-defense, also suitable for hunting most game in the lower 48 - not moose, elk, or grizzly, but able to serve for anything else. They will definitly handle deer or boar. As a matter of fact, in SURVIVAL situation, they will work on moose, elk, bear........
I also own a PTR-91, an American made semi-auto version of the G3 which shoots the venerable 7.62 x 51 cartridge, much more powerful than the AK's 7.62 x 39 whose closest analogue is probably the hallowed 30-30, though the AK round loses a little in the comparison even there. If, God forbid, I were to face another person with rifle in hand, I would choose the PTR91. With it I would outgun someone armed with either a legal or full auto AR15 / AK47. I would stipulate that a person armed with Browning's civilian BAR or Remington's 7400, chambered with any common deer-hunting round, in a short altercation, would outgun the person armed with the Assault Rifle.
Rounds like .30-06, .308, 280 Rem, 270 Win, 7mm Mag, .300 Mag, or 7mm-08 are much more potent than either the AK's 7.62 x 39 or AR's 5.56 x 45.
At ranges over 100 yds, faced with a single opponent, a scoped bolt gun would probably win over the AR or AK if the shooters possessed equal skill.
The second amendment was placed in the Constitution to provide, at the end of the day, protection for the citizenry against an out-of-control government. To say the citizens can't possess arms as good or at least close to as good as those possessed by the government is to repudiate the 2A's reason for existence. Additionally, why should the citizenry not be allowed to possess weaponry as good as that possessed by gangsters and thugs?
By calling them assault rifles, we fall into the trap the gun banners have set for us. Banning "assault rifles" that really aren't opens the door for more and more stringent restrictions. If two types of weapons are banned, semi-auto's and "sniper" rifles, we will quickly find ourselves armed with nothing but single and double barreled rifles and maybe lever actions.
Don't think "Sniper" rifles are on the list? They are next in line after SA's, the gun banners have TOLD US SO. A sniper rifle is a bolt action rifle with a scope. Hint: A DEER RIFLE.
Owning an AR or AK variant, civilian legal, does two things for the Citizen; It provides a wonderful tool for survival and self defense to the Civilian and his or her family and it makes a statement that the owner understands, approves, and respects the 2nd Amendment and by extension the entire Constitution.
More on this later.
