Dear MSSA Friends,
MSSA's Montana-made guns bill, HB 246, passed the House on Second Reading this morning by a vote of 64-36. If you want to check names voting for and against (your Representative), the list is HERE.
Confession: With all the other balls (and bills) in the air, I frankly missed that HB 246 was scheduled for Second Reading today, so I failed to alert you to contact your Representative. HB 246 will likely be up for Third Reading in the House on Monday. If your Representative in the House voted against HB 246, you should send him or her a message asking for support on Third Reading. If your Representative voted for HB 246, you should send him or her a note of thanks for the positive vote.
Purpose. HB 246 declares that any firearms made and retained in Montana are not subject to ANY federal control or regulation under the power of Congress to regulate commerce among the states (the "commerce clause" of the U.S. Constitution). The purpose of HB 246 is to set up a legal challenge in federal court to Congress's commerce clause power. If we win that legal challenge, then we get to make our own guns here in Montana unfettered by any federal rules.
Our thanks to Rep. Joel Boniek (R-Livingston) for sponsoring this bill, and our congratulations to him for this success, so far.
